So You’ve Noticed Your First Varicose Vein: Now What?
No matter what age or gender you are, noticing your first varicose vein can be a frightening experience. Not only can varicose veins be unsightly and embarrassing in appearance, but they can also be a sign that something more serious is going on beneath the skin. Not everyone will get varicose veins during their lifetime, but if and when it does happen to you, the very first thing you need to remember is not to panic.
One or two varicose veins in themselves will likely not present a serious condition, but it’s generally a good idea to get checked out just in case. You’ll want to start out by scheduling an appointment for a vein screening, and preferably with a physician who specializes in diagnosis and treatment of the veins. During this appointment, your physician will examine your bare legs and feet to determine the severity of your condition, and can recommend further treatment options to you if necessary. Your physician may also perform a simple ultrasound test on your legs as well if your condition cannot be determined by sight, or they may recommend scheduling one for a later date.
In addition to a physical examination, your doctor will also go over any symptoms that you are experiencing and ask you questions about your family and personal histories. They will also ask you a variety of questions about your symptoms and whether or not you are experiencing any pain along with them. This is also the perfect opportunity to ask any questions that you might have, and since this is your very first experience with varicose veins, you are likely to have a lot of them.
Some questions you will likely want to ask your doctor include:
- What is causing my symptoms and what further symptoms can I expect?
- What is the difference between varicose veins and spider veins and is it possible to have them without also having venous insufficiency?
- What treatment options are available for treating varicose veins and spider veins and are they covered by insurance?
- How should I change my diet or lifestyle habits in order to manage and alleviate my symptoms?
- What kind of self-care can I participate in at home in order to ensure that I’m more comfortable and that my condition does not grow any worse?
