If you have varicose veins, there’s a good chance they’ve been bothering you. Whether it’s their 
unsightly appearance that you dislike or the discomfort that they bring you, you’re ready to get rid of them. Luckily, you have options. Vein specialists, like Dr. Zuzga of West Florida Vein Center, offer treatments to help reduce the appearance of and/or get rid of varicose veins. Even if the veins aren’t physically bothering you (yet), it’s in your best interest to get these veins checked out by a vein doctor, so that they will not lead to further complications like blood clots.
Below, we will feature one specific treatment for varicose veins: microphlebectomy (also known as a phlebectomy). This is just one technique to remove varicose veins. In this procedure, varicose veins are micro-surgically removed through tiny punctures (incisions). On the day of the procedure, the patient’s leg is marked up where the veins bulge out on the skin, followed by injections of an anesthetic surrounding the vein.
After the numbing medication has been inserted into the body, the doctor makes tiny incisions (2-3mm) and uses a crochet-type hook to essentially grab the vein and remove it. By doing this, the vein is interrupted which causes any remaining portions of the vein to “clot off” and the bulging areas will disappear. Stitches are usually not required.
For most patients, this procedure causes no pain, beyond the feeling of the prick of the needle when the anesthetic is injected. Since the area is numb, the patients do not feel any of the doctor’s stabs or the vein being removed. This procedure does not require a stay in the hospital.
At his office, Dr. Zuzga will write a prescription for prescription-strength ibuprofen that can help for the first day or two after the procedure. Usually, people end up only needed to use extra-strength Tylenol or Motrin to reduce pain symptoms.
After the procedure, patents are told to take it easy for the first 48 hours, but walking is encouraged to promote healing. Patients walk right out of the office post procedure. After two days, people are allowed to resume all normal activities but should stay away from strenuous exercise and hot tubs for 7 to 10 days. After this time, patients should be back to normal.
This procedure is often times used alongside another treatment when veins in the legs aren’t working well. Other procedures usually used with a microphlebectomy include ligation and stripping, laser treatment, or radiofrequency treatment.
