Is Your Diet Making Your Varicose Veins Worse?
Varicose veins can be not only unsightly but also painful causing leg cramps, pain, swelling, edema, and even Restless Leg Syndrome. The last thing you want to do is exacerbate the problem by eating the wrong foods.
What are “The Wrong Foods?”
Food with elevated salt content will make the body retain water. Water retention can cause swelling and inflammation, and in turn this causes increased levels of pain.
Most processed foods contain added salt. Sugar and simple carbohydrates also can cause water to be retained as they release large amounts of insulin. Insulin impairs the ability to excrete sodium. Bloating and water retention is the result.
Both alcohol and fruit juice can promote the growth and spread of existing varicose vein areas.
What Should You Eat?
If you notice varicose veins beginning to develop make sure to adapt your diet to include plenty of foods that are high in potassium and fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while remaining low in sugars and salt. This includes artificial sweeteners.
Drinking plenty of water is important as well – hydration is key to all aspects of health including circulatory.
