Treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome

RLSRestless leg syndrome is a condition that affects people across a wide range of age groups and people with different lifestyle and habits. The syndrome consists of what the name implies, a restless leg. Those afflicted with this syndrome with find that they have uncontrollable leg twitches, primarily at night as they try to fall asleep.

It is said that as many as 15% of Americans currently suffer from restless leg syndrome. Most commonly, restless leg syndrome is actually a symptom of an underlying problem based in venous insufficiency (vein disease), though it can present as a side effect of certain medication – when the medication is stopped, the RLS should as well if it is medication based.

Though there are a number of medications that have proven effective at reducing the symptoms of restless leg syndrome, consulting a Vein Specialist to rule out an underlying vein problem is highly recommended. If no vein disease is found, there are a number of effective home remedies that many people can turn to as a means to help manage this irritating and oftentimes uncomfortable condition.

What to try:

MASSAGE – Massage helps to get your circulation flowing properly and may help to reduce the RLS twitching.

HOT & COLD PACKS – daily application of both heat and ice have been shown to help reduce the symptoms of RLS.

VITAMIN DEFICIENCY – There is evidence that restless leg syndrome can be brought on by a vitamin deficiency, such as not getting enough Vitamin B, magnesium, iron, and folic acid. Taking a high-quality daily multivitamin is a great way to ensure that you are getting the recommended daily allowance of the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

STRETCHING – Regular stretching and light exercise has also proven to be pretty effective at helping people reduce the number of symptoms their restless leg syndrome causes them.

CAFFEINE – For some people, avoiding certain stimulants such as caffeine can really help.

MOVEMENT – Additionally, ensure that you do not sit for too long. Take breaks, getting up to stretch regularly.
