Living with Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are often looked at as a cosmetic issue. The truth of the matter is that venous insufficiency which causes varicose and spider veins can be very painful.
The onset of varicose veins doesn’t mean that you are doomed to a life with achy painful legs or that you can never wear shorts again. In fact, the sooner you seek medical advice and treatment the better your prognosis and outcome.
Some advice for those dealing with vein issues:
Myth: Varicose veins will go away on their own.
Completely false. Vein issues do not reverse themselves.
Myth: Natural remedies will be able to cure varicose veins.
Also false.
Certain cremes or herbs my help you feel better only a medical professional and medical treatment can eliminate damaged veins. Many of the treatments available today are virtually painless, leave little to no scarring, and allow you to resume your normal activities within a few days.
Steer clear of foods and drinks that are known to make veins worse. This includes fast food that is high in salt as well as alcohol.
Maintain a weight. A healthy weight means your body doesn’t have to work extra hard to support itself. It will alleviate excess pressure on your leg. A healthy diet can give relief from the discomfort varicose veins cause.
Movement is needed – Don’t stay sedentary for long periods of time. Avoid sitting or standing for extended periods and if your profession requires it, make sure that you take frequent breaks to move around. Exercise helps improve circulation and helps with weight maintenance.
Avoid high heels and tight clothing, especially tight-fitting pants. Constrictive clothing can thwart circulation while high heels force the legs and feet to move unnaturally, two things which are not good for varicose veins.
Do wear compression stockings in addition to loose, comfortable clothing. Compression stockings can be purchased over the counter and do wonders for alleviating the symptoms of varicose veins and venous insufficiency.
Don’t assume that your varicose veins can be cured and eliminated in a single treatment. Treating venous insufficiency takes time, and often requires multiple procedures in addition to the lifestyle changes you will need to make. Follow your doctor’s instructions following any procedures but also listen to your body. With the right treatment plan and dedication on your part, varicose veins and venous insufficiency can be managed and you can find the comfort and confidence that you hoped for.
