Vein Issues – The Dos and the Don’ts to Keep Your Legs Healthy
If you or someone you love has ever struggled with varicose veins and venous insufficiency, then you know how painful and uncomfortable of a condition it can truly be. However, living with varicose veins does not have to be the end of the world, and does not mean that you are doomed to a life of wearing pants or being in constant pain. While some days will always be worse than others, there are certain things that you can do, while avoiding others, that can make you feel better and help to prevent the further progression of your condition.
Don’t stay sedentary for long periods of time. Avoid sitting or standing for extended periods and if your profession requires it, make sure that you take frequent breaks to move around.
Do stay active and get frequent exercise. Not only will it improve circulation, but the activity will help in managing your weight as well.
Don’t eat foods or drink beverages that are known to make venous insufficiency worse. Stay away from alcohol, as well as foods high in sodium and sugar, and generally avoid a high caloric intake.
Do maintain a healthy diet and weight. A healthy weight will alleviate any excess pressure on your lower extremities, and along with a proper diet, can provide relief from the discomfort of varicose veins.
Don’t wear high heels or tight clothing, especially around your waist and thighs. Tight clothing can constrict circulation while high heels force the legs and feet to move unnaturally, two things which are not good for varicose veins.
Do wear compression stockings in addition to loose, comfortable clothing. Compression stockings can be purchased over the counter and do wonders for alleviating the symptoms of varicose veins and venous insufficiency.
Don’t believe that your varicose veins will go away on their own or strictly through herbal regimens or the application of topical creams. While natural remedies can certainly help, venous insufficiency is a medical condition that must be addressed by a medical professional.
Do consider invasive and minimally invasive procedures for treating your veins. Many of the treatments available today are virtually painless, leave little to no scarring, and allow you to resume your normal activities within a couple of days.
Don’t assume that your varicose veins can be cured and eliminated in a single treatment. Treating venous insufficiency takes time, and often requires multiple procedures in addition to the lifestyle changes you will need to make.
Do follow your doctor’s instructions following any procedures but also listen to your body. With the right treatment plan and dedication on your part, varicose veins and venous insufficiency can be managed and you can find the comfort and confidence that you hoped for.
