Varicose Veins Can Form at Any Age

west florida vein center teens and varicose veinsAre you dealing with vein issues?

When we think of varicose veins we think of older adults. Middle age to elderly to be exact. The truth is that through certain life and health experiences vein issues can present as early as adolescence.

Most vein centers, especially those in Southwest Florida, will verify that most of their patients treated for varicose veins are over age 50, however, it is not entirely uncommon to see patients in their teens and even pre-teens. They can happen to men, women, boys, and girls.

Because so many people are under the impression that varicose veins only occur in old age, the young people who do have them are often slow to realize what they are. It’s because of this that they may not seek treatment and instead wait until the damaged veins become too uncomfortable to ignore.

Varicose veins do not go away on their own. In fact, they worsen over time.

When varicose veins do occur at a young age (Teens and Preteens) it is almost always due to a genetic abnormality more than any factors that were within the patient’s control. Essentially, if a child or teenager develops varicose veins it is likely because one or both of their parents suffers or suffered from them as well.

The good news is that the more dangerous complications which occur in older adults are very unlikely in young adults. Vein disease is very much an age sensitive issue. But the sooner you take care of it, the better your circulatory health will be as you age.

For those who have vein issues, maintaining a healthy weight and diet, staying active and exercising frequently, wearing loose and non-restrictive clothing, and never taking up the smoking of cigarettes can ensure that varicose veins are kept under control and do not become a major problem later in life.

Realizing you are developing varicose veins is never easy to realize at any age but can be helpful towards addressing and improving one’s overall health in the long run.
