Professionals! Do You Stand or Sit All Day? Protect Your Veins

Are you a professional who stands or sits nearly all day long? You may be at risk for vein disease and even blood clots.

One of the leading causes of vein disorders today is a high level of inactivity; sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, preventing healthy circulation throughout the body. While staying active and exercising frequently are a person’s best line of defense against varicose veins and spider veins, at times, inactivity simply cannot be avoided, especially if a person’s profession requires them to stand at a podium or sit at a desk for hours on end. Fortunately, there are actions that you can take to ensure that you can both keep your current job and preserve the health of your legs, for many years to come.

Take Frequent Breaks

Whether your job requires a lot of sitting or a lot of standing, it will be good for you to break up the routine whenever possible. If you sit at a desk for most of the day or remain standing in one spot, make sure that you take the time to walk around every hour or two, outside if possible. Not only will this get your blood flowing, but it’s a good opportunity to get some fresh air and break up some of the monotony of the workday.

Practice Good Posture

Many people don’t know that while crossing one’s legs can be comfortable, it can impede circulation and result in the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins. Preventing this can often be as simple as elevating the feet while keeping the legs straight, reducing swelling in the ankles and feet and promoting a healthy flow of blood between the heart and legs. If your job allows it, it’s wise to keep a footstool under your desk as an aide.

Save the Heels for Special Occasions

High heels might look nice, but they are definitely not good for your vein health. High heels limit circulation by putting extra pressure on your legs, especially if your job requires long periods of standing. Opt for low heels or even heels whenever possible, and save the high heels for special events only.

Wear Compression Stockings

Compression stockings are not just for the elderly and can be found in most drugstores. This type of stocking uses stronger elastics than traditional stockings, and, by compressing the legs and increasing arterial pressure within them, relieves many of the symptoms of current venous disorders and helps in preventing others from forming or getting worse. While compression stockings are available over-the-counter, it’s always best to speak with your physician and make sure that they are the right choice for you and your condition.

If you think that your profession might be having a negative effect on your vein health, it is important to be aware of preventative measures that you can take. Your job should never be bad for your health.
