Varicose Veins – Sorting Out Myth from Fact

Varicose Veins – Sorting Out Myth from Fact

varicose veinsThere is so much information and misinformation available on the internet that it is often difficult to know truth from fiction. When it comes to health it is vital to have the right information so that you can make informed choices.

So let’s get down to it. We are here to help you sort out myth from fact when it comes to varicose veins.

#1 Varicose veins are merely a cosmetic issue

False. This is not always the case. Often varicose veins are a health issue, not just cosmetic. The most common symptoms include achiness, heaviness, throbbing, cramping, and swelling.

#2 Varicose veins only happen to women

False. While more prevalent in women, men do get them as well.

#3 Everyone will get varicose veins as they age

False. The causes of varicose veins are primarily genetic. Not everyone is prone to getting them.

#4 You will know if you have varicose veins because they are always visible.

False. Not all veins are surface level.

#5 Standing causes varicose veins

The verdict is still out to as if this is an actual cause or just an activity that would cause it to be more bothering of a malady.

#6 Surgery is your only option

It used to be that the only treatment available was a surgery known as stripping. This would remove surgically the damaged veins from the body.

There are now more minimally invasive procedures available that leave no scar.

Endothermal ablation: uses a needle to deliver heat directly to the vein. The heat causes it to close and cease functioning.

Sclerosing agents: These chemicals close a vein by causing irritation. adhesives may also be used to seal a vein shut. Adhesives do not require the area to be numbed.
