Sitting All Day Every Day Can Lead To Vein Issues

compression stockings sitting every day varicose veinsWe live in a modern day sedentary computer-based world. If your job goes right along with that trend you may be in for an unpleasant surprise down the road. As much as you may love your computer-based work, your office, and your job in general, getting obsessed with what’s on your screen and coming across your desk, failing to take adequate breaks may just hurt you.

This lack of movement can cause vein issues including venous insufficiency leading to potential DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) aka blood clots. Sitting can halt proper circulation especially if you tend to sit crosslegged. Spider veins and even varicose veins may begin to form.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to ensure that you can maintain your current job as well as preserve the health of your legs as you age.

Maintain Good Posture

While crossing one’s legs can be comfortable, it may also impinge circulation and result in the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins. Prevention can often be as simple as elevating your feet keeping the legs straight. This helps to reduce swelling and promote a healthy flow of blood between the heart and legs. If your desk has a rest bar use it. If not bring a small stool to keep under the desk to prop your feet up on.

Take a Break Every Hour or So

No matter if your job requires a lot of sitting or standing, it will be healthy for you to break up that routine whenever possible. If you sit for most of the day or remain upright stagnant in one spot, make sure that you walk around every hour or two, outside if possible. This will get your blood flowing, but it’s a good opportunity to get some fresh air and break up some of the monotony of the workday.

Skip The High Heels At Work

High heels are very stylish, however, they are not good for your vein health or for your feet, legs, or back. High heels limit circulation by putting extra pressure on your legs. Opt for low heels or no heels whenever possible, and save the high heels for nights out.

Wear Compression Stockings

While they have gotten the reputation over the years of being for the senior citizens in our society the truth is that compression is good for your legs. Compression hose are sold in most drug stores. They look nearly the same as normal tights but are made with stronger elastics.

By compressing the legs and increasing arterial pressure within them relieves many of the symptoms of current venous disorders and helps in preventing others from forming or getting worse. While compression stockings are available over-the-counter, it’s always best to speak with your physician and make sure that they are the right choice for you and your condition.

Never let your job take a toll on your health. Make adjustments as needed so you can be healthy, happy, and continue to be productive.
