Veiny Arms – Vascularity or Vein Disease?

Veiny Arms – Vascularity or Vein Disease?

Veiny Arms – Vascularity or Vein Disease?
This image is a great example of vascularity, NOT varicose veins.

Varicose veins present most commonly in the legs, but can also form in the arms, hands, pelvic region, or even the face. Visible veins on the arms may be confused for naturally more pronounced veins that can begin to show when someone starts lifting weights and doing bodybuilding.

In those with an athletic body type veiny arms are common because of a high muscle-to-fat ratio. Muscle pushes the veins toward the surface of the skin. Having less of a fatty layer below the skin increases vein visibility. Additionally, during and after strenuous exercise more blood is pushed through the veins which enlarges their appearance during vasodilation. This is also known in gym terms as “getting a pump.” When it comes to the world of bodybuilding, this vascular look where veins pop visibly is considered attractive and desirable.

If you do not lift weights and do not have a very low body fat percentage yet the veins in your arms are becoming more visible, twisted, or bumpy looking over time it would be a good idea to consult with a Vein Specialist as it could be the progression of vein disease.

If these veins are accompanied by aching arms, throbbing, tingling, or itching sensations those are all possible tip-offs to vein damage as well.

Varicose Vein Texture
Varicose veins tend to be lumpy, bumpy, and twisted as in this image.

When it comes to dealing with venous issues, the sooner you get them checked out the better the ultimate outcome will be, should you need treatment. Contrary to popular myth, spider veins and varicose veins are not a normal sign of age. They can potentially be a sign of damage and need to be addressed.

If you are noticing veiny arms, and are in the Tampa Bay area, give the office of The West Florida Vein Center a call at 727-712-3233 to schedule your consultation. Vein treatment is covered by most insurance plans, so don’t wait.
